Tel El-Amarna: This rich archaeological site was originally known as Akhetaten, and was built as a new city in around 1348 BC by the Pharaoh Akhenaton. Akhenaton moved there with his beautiful wife Nefertiti to escape the wrath of the priests of Thebes, which he incurred for rejecting the cult of Amun-Ra and destroying its idols, instead promoting a monotheistic cult dedicated to the worship of the One God, Aton. The city was abandoned four years after Akhenaton’s death, when his son-in-law Tutankhamun set up court once again in Thebes. The site of the ruined city lies on an incredibly peaceful plateau, which is reached by a steep climb up a cliff. 400 cuneiform tablets discovered here in 1887 provide a detailed record of Ancient Egypt and its relations with the rest of the Middle East, in the form of letters between Akhenaton and the governors of cities in Syria and Palestine. At the base of the cliff are more than 25 tombs, many with intricate complexes of tunnels and chambers, and spectacular wall paintings and inscriptions.

At the Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte, the four famous colossal statues of Ramses II sit majestically over 20 meters high, staring out across the desert. Six massive standing statues front the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the cow-headed goddess of love and built in honor of Ramses’ favorite wife, Queen Nefertari,, each 10 meters high. In modern times the waters that would rise with the completion of the High Dam threatened the two temples of Abu Simbel. A campaign to save them was organized by UNESCO, with the temples being cut into blocks, raised piece-by-piece, and reassembled in a new position higher up the hillside. The massive job took two years to complete, 1966-1968.

Visit noble’s tombs: Tombs of the Nobles
The Tombs of the Nobles is a very interesting site on Luxor's west bank. No kings or queens had their tomb or temple built there, however it is all devoted to persons now only remembered by the most detailed historical works. There are 400 tombs there, of which 7 are of high interest.
What a visitor can see there is a great change from the almost repetitive images in the temples and the great tombs. The noblemen who had their tombs built here used a different artwork and were concerned with other matters than the royalty. There is quite little of scenes depicting judgment and resurrection, and more imagery of earthly life and its continuation in the afterlife.
Workers’ Village at Deir El Medina
Visit the remains of the self-contained village on the West Bank where the workmen who built the kings’ and queens’ tombs lived in mud brick houses with their families. The site gives archeologists a view of how urban people lived in ancient Egypt. You can also visit the tombs that the workmen created for themselves, to admire the art in ordinary people’s tombs. Nearby is the Temple of Deir El Medina, from Ptolemaic times.
Medinet Habu and the Temple of Ramses III
The magnificent Medinet Habu is a series of temples built by the Pharaoh Ramses III (1182-1151 BC) and second only to Karnak Temple in size and complexity. The most impressive is the Mortuary Temple of Ramses III, decorated with relief work depicting his many military victories. With its massive mud brick enclosure that held storehouses, workshops, administrative offices, and residences of priests and officials, Medinet Habu grew into a city that maintained its population well into Coptic times.
Afternoon Tea: Return to your cruise for afternoon tea on board.
Dinner: Tonight’s farewell dinner will be a gala dinner (jacket required), with white-gloved waiters serving gourmet cuisine followed by a belly dancer, accompanied by a whirling dervish show.
Overnight: On board in Luxor.

A hot air balloon ride is a spectacular and exciting way to view the monuments of the ancient city of Thebes. The adventure begins just before dawn, when you transfer to the desert to watch your balloon in the last stages of being inflated. As you take off, experience the freedom of a completely silent rise through the cool morning air to 1,000 feet, where you can see the life-giving Nile snaking across ancient desert sands, fringed with green fertile land.
